You betcha. Starting in January 2007, US citizens will have to show a passport or some other secure document that shows their identity and citizenship when they re-enter the country from the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico, Panama and Bermuda.

when you're FLYING to Mexico , you need to have passports. when you're travelling through LAND or SEA passports are not any further yet required. This area of the regulation gained't bypass into effect till a "later" date that has no longer yet been set, yet which will be after next summer. Your question says "travel TO mexico." A US citizen does not need a US passport to go into Mexico - one way trip.
A US citizen does now need a US passport to RETURN back into the US from Mexico. It will be required to enter the US.

Xiomara is corret. You need a passport if you are FLYING, but not for driving. If you are driving you need your birth certificate and a picture I.D. Starting in Jan. 2008 you will need a passport for any kind of travel to Mexico. See the website below to read for yourself.

not unless you are going by air. Say, flying from San Fran to Acapulco; you need passport. DRIVING into Mexico...you don't.
