Just some ideas its pretty obvious Mothers are the source of nurture in their family and providing a paying job for a mother allows her self respect and a sense of worth in a visible way.If there are more stable families then the community is stronger If women are respected within a community then there is less violence ,abuse, and social problems.
Also because women are more likely to work cooperatively with other women in a small business ventures and to take care of priorities like children ,the sick and aged with any profits .
The economic status of women is an indication of education and health priorities of that country . After all, women bear children, educate children in the traditions or expectations of their culture and look after the family as their role over and above a paying job. So the importance of their role is to do with quality of life for their families, the health of their children ,physically, emotionally and mentally .Women carry the world on their breast figuratively so whatever strengthens women within their social structure goes towards creating a semblance of balance in a traditionally male dominated society.

Many developing countries are highly patriarchal. As a result, women have little access to education and few employment opportunities. As a result they tend to marry and have children early--resulting in a high birth rate. The consequences of this pattern are that a major part of the population is undereducated (women) and a high level of stress is placed on existing instutions by the excessive number of poor, children, etc.
Raising women's social standing leads to increased educational and employment opportunities. Given the opportunity, many women will opt for delaying childbearing and stay in school and/or go to work. On a micro level, this means families with more income and fewer mouths to feed--opening the door to greater discretionary spending. Improved education also creates a more skilled workforce--essential to economic development.

Women bring enormous talent and creativity to any society they are in. If they are not forced to stay barefoot and pregnant, they can contribute on an economic level as well. Also, lower birth rates will help raise the living standards of poorer people.

Women who are treated like property or 2nd class citizens usually are undereducated, subject to domestic violence, and prone to more diseases (including AIDS). If their status is elevated, they usually want to focus on gaining income, education, and health care. All of these issues elevate the current families and the upcoming generation. I should throw in my mom's response about why women should be valued. "They civilize society."
