Since Mt. Shasta has not had a major eruption since the area was heavily settled, its presence has been mostly beneficial, with the possible exception of the money being spent to monitor the volcano, which will erupt sometime.
1) Some of the Native Americans consider Shasta to be a sacred place, so it has a place in their religion.
2) Volcanic soil is generally fertile and good for agriculture.
3) It is a very beautiful mountain and is a tourist attraction, which brings money into the county.
