I have a formal dress that I haven't worn in several years. I have an occasion to wear it in a few weeks, but I have lost a few pounds around my waist since the last time I've worn this dress. It's not a huge alteration, I wasn't very large before, I'm just a little trimmer around the waist. I've never taken in a dress before and I'm wondering what's the best way to do so. Should I use darts? Where should I put them? Should I use something else? Thanks.

Unfortunately, there aren't any tailors near where I live.

The dress is a dimple A-line princess waist. I was afraid darts would add bulk...what should I do instead?

Well, a simple and very easy alternation is a simple plain sash. Get it in a contrasting color (like if the dress was pink, get a brown sash). Very cute!

does your dress have darts?? if it don't, then just create one. it will add curves to the dress making it a better fit. darts at the front are usually on the same line as your bust points are. if, for example you're going to take in 1 inch off the waist, just make the darts 1/2" each. i don't know how to explain to you where to put the back darts at.. it's usually alligned with the 2 dented part of our back.

That's a tough question without seeing it first. Is the waist gathered? Is it a straight 'A' line dress , then at the sides...I would need more info to help you. but stay away from darts, they add bulk

I would advise you to take it to a seamstress, most dry cleaners have them and they charge very little, especially for that job and it will look lie it is supposed to. It will be worth it and look good and way cheaper than a new dress too. So call and ask, also maybe someone you know is a sewer, ask everyone and go to them or let them come to you to do the fix. Good luck and enjoy yourself.
