My porch light broke in a weird way: the entire glass portion of the light bulb fell off, leaving only the metal base of the bulb in the socket. I can't get a grip on it, and I can't use the old potato trick since there's no broken glass sticking out. What do I do?

You can take a raw potato and press it onto the remaining part of the light bulb and then turn it counter clockwise-therefore unscrewing the bulb or you can cut the power to the bulb by fuse or breaker (not by the switch)and use a pair of needle nose pliers to get a grip on the metal part of the bulb. Turn it counter clockwise.

First turn power off at breaker or fuse if possible. Next take a potato and push it into socket far enough to catch base and unscrew. This has always worked for me. Good luck.
P.S. Make sure power is off.

turn off the electricity at the fuse box, MAKE SURE IT'S OFF before you touch it. Then use a cotton pair of gloves and unscrew the old bulb. if you can get your fingers in there comfortably maybe even a cooking mit glove would work. If you're squeemish about this then call a male (male neighbor) to fix it for you.

use pliers to grasp the metal, if tht doesnt work, then remove the socket and replace it. It should be pretty cheap at a home depot. just remember to turn the power off!!!

measure the inside diameter of the bulb, then go to your local hardware store and buy one of the expanding drum sanders that fits in a drill that will just fit into the hole. insert it into the base, expand it then spin the bulb out.
