I'd really appreciate any help people could give - I'd like to get him/her a friend, but of course I'd have to know the gender before I can figure out if I should do that or not.

Hope those are clear enough to tell. Thanks again!

Here's a pic of the mouse, just for perspective/because I'm proud of the little cutie:

Scabbers is about 4 weeks old. If it's a male mouse, I know it would be much, much easier to tell if he were older, but it's hard for me to tell at this point.

Hi there. If you get this answer could you do me a favor and take another picture? Hold the mouse's tail up and push down gently on her back so that her rear end sticks up in the air. Then I can tell you for sure. I am about 99% sure she is a female. (FYI you can not protrude a mouse's "member" like you can with a guinea pig.) I am a laboratory animal technician and work with mice everyday and specifically I breed them. You can e-mail it to me if you want at oma00@hotmail.com and I can tell you 100%. She is adorable. What's her name?

It's you with the cute mouse again. Here is the definite way to tell if your cutie is a boy or not. Grab the rear area, if the area you grab is flexible, the mouse is a boy, if you cannot grab anything, it is a girl. Only one picture, I thought maybe it is maybe a boy.
Remember what I was telling you about getting a friend last time because I wouldn't want Scabbers to be beat up and killed. Did you know there is a fancy mouse association? Your mouse looks most like a calico. When holding the cutie and it suddenly wants to escape, it probably wants to go to the cage to urinate. Guinea pigs and hamsters are the same way. Please be sure to use Germ-X after handling, as rodents carry salmonella more often than reptiles. It is because they are mass produced in big facilities. Have a lot of fun with Scabbers.

She's a really pretty mouse - really unusual.

Ah, yes, I also think that she's a girl. Years & years ago, I used to keep mice & I'm sure that she looks more like a girl than a boy. That first photo you posted is what makes me think that as I seem to remember little girls looking like that plus of course their openings were much closer together than a males ... easier of course if you have something to compare it to.

I also used to notice that when you looked down on them from above, females were more rounded to the rear - males, especially when they are older, seem to less round & more sort of shaped intowards the tail. Gosh it's hard to explain.

Anyway, I've just found a site with great photos of the differences between males & females - with baby mice photos too - apparently one of the easiest ways to tell is if they have nipples ... only female mice have nipples - anyway, the link:

So hopefully, you can compare your little one to the photos to decide once & for all.

By the way, that looks a really interesting site.

Good luck.

Well I would definitely say it is a male. Even though the males ''thing'' is retracted it is still visibly clear. If still in doubt you should really got to the vet but just remember even professionals can make mistakes. You can also check yourself by making an o shape with your index and thumb and place over your mouses genitals and gently squeeze if the penis comes out than obviously it is male

Male platys have a pointed formed anal fin and woman have a fan formed one. also, platys do maximum perfect in communities of one million male for each 2 woman, because the boys always pick to mate, and can want to harrharas a million woman to demise.
