Did you just tear it? Cartilage will tear, not break. Put some ice on it (put ice in a rubber glove, cover with a cloth and hold on your ear; or hold a bag of frozen veggies covered with a cloth on your ear). Do that for 10 minutes, off for 10 minutes, then on for 10 more minutes. Do that every hour for a few hours. Take some tylenol or ibuprofen for the discomfort. If it doesn't look any better in a couple days, go see a doc.

I got a second piercing near my cartilage piercing about a year ago. I thought i was infected a few times, but i think the general rule is that an earring is infected if it is red and swelling, hot to the touch or leaking a dark yellow greenish smelly puss. So if yours is extremely swollen there is a good chance it is infected. BUT this happened to me, and i just left it alone, didn't touch the earrings at all, or let anything touch my ear, and it went away in about a day or two. If you cannot see part of the jewelry anymore go directly to a piercer. You should consult the person who pierced you before removing the jewelry. Removing it could trap the infection inside your body and make it difficult to treat. Also you could be allergic to your new earring maybe? Personally, i would say just leave it alone, because this sort of thing tends to happen with cartilage piercings. But if you are feeling sick, SEEK help. vitamin c will help against infection as well!

Cartilage can tear but not break. What on earth were you doing to get a tear in cartilage of the ear? If you were piercing it then you may have torn it for which it will not repair by itself due to having no blood vessels to nourish it. The swelling and redness is usually sign of irritation or an infection. The worst is that your ear will rot off. Piercing ears is a silly pastime without proper knowledge of aseptic procedures and some degree of knowledge of anatomy. So if that is what you were doing then little sympathy. Go see your doctor and have it examined to have the flesh of your ear saved while you can!

the fleshy tissue of your ear can heal but most pure cartilage (like the large piece in your knee) doesn't have any blood going to it and won't heal.. so you should probably be careful with it.

Your ear lobe should be just fine though, think about how piercings of earlobes will grow back eventually.

there is a new procedure your doctor can recommend. it's call a cartilage cast. it's designed specifically for broken cartilage. go see your doctor and ask for this, and you will be back to normal in no time!

Relax, its cartilage. It does not break. The swelling will go down. And why were you stretching it?
