So she's ugly because she wears glasses and has braces? Oh my God not glasses AND braces! She's hideous! (Hint: sarcasm)

OK, so I'm not judging the show because I'm not in a place to, I've never actually watched a whole episode. I just think it's kind of dumb they call her "ugly" becuase of glasses and braces. Kind of like in those teen movies where there's a girl that no one wants to date because she wears glasses, so she must be some sort of freakish socially inept clod. Then it turns out she's HOT without glasses and the coolest guy in school wants to date her.

For the record, I never said I thought the show took place in school - I was merely comparing the concept of "ugliness" used to a genre of movies that did happen to take place in school.

Oh, and by the way, Yvette, if you want to make an intelligent point, you may want to spell "school" correctly - otherwise you really just look pretty stupid.

When I first watched the show, I was waiting for the inevitable ending where Betty gets a makeover and sudden everyone fawns over her.

The show, however, is a surprising story about how a girl who does not "fit the bill" -- she works in the fashion industry with 'rexi girls and six-foot, gorgeous, blonde models -- succeeds with her brain, her wit, and her kindness.

The romance, while part of the story line, is by no means pervasive and it nice to see Betty with a smart guy who is really interested in her.

If anything, the show demonizes Betty's super-skinny, overly-made-up co-workers and makes a statement about the normal girls of the world.

I agree. I haven't seen the show, but I have seen La Bella Mas Fea, which is a Spanish show (with a girl named Betty). It's been around for a long time and is quite popular. That's why I think they are trying an English version.
