In my case Id like to call my company "Zima" which means "Winter" in Russian but I believe there is a liquor brand named this. So Id like to find alternatives. Any ideas?

Go to the secretary of state, division of corporations for the state in which you would like to register your company. All 50 states have a searchable database where you can enter the name of your choice and see if anything comes up that conflicts.

yes there is a drink named zima. and i doubt you could even ust it along with some other word because then it would still sound like zima product...so you might have to leave that one alone. if you're just working locally then register with your local tax office. if you incorporate then register with your state. i've done all this and haven't had to register nor check with the federal government for my name. however if you're not in the united states then i have no idea.

You have to register and get certified with the government. They run it through a data base and they will let you know if the name is taken or not..

Good luck!
