Why did Smeagol have to die? He really helped Frodo, even saved his life once or twice. It seems like he should have been rewarded with life and somehow restored. Poor fella.

He led them to the gate when they were lost, when dufus Master followed the lights and almost drown, he pulled Master from the water.
When the Ring was thrown into the lake of fire, the wave should have passed through Smeagol killing the evil within, leaving the man to live and grow into his former self.

Because he was obsessed with getting the ring back. He didn't really help Frodo at all. Samwise Gamgee on the other hand really had Frodo's back. Smeagol/Gollum had the same problem with the ring that Bilbo Baggins had with the ring, they were over powered by it. Had it not been for Gandalf, Frodo would have been over powered as well. Smeagol was expendable in the trilogy.

He had to die to be finally set free. He was so corrupted and twisted by the ring the only way for him to find peace was to be one with the ring once again. There was no way he could ever have been restored. His whole life was the ring, his precious. He was so enthralled with getting the ring back that his mind splintered beyond any type of repair. Death was the only viable solution.
