Stay busy. Being the one who is fixing the meal, playing with the kids, washing the dishes, or whatever keeps you from having to be immobile and forced to listen and respond. Give yourself a treat for dealing with them - seriously, every time we go to my mother-in-law's house I get a McDonalds Sausage Egg & Cheese Biscuit and the rest of the time they're not in my diet. Create a silver lining somehow. Good luck.

I try to think of how much it means to my husband that I am nice to his mother. I also remind my self that she knows not how abrasive she is. I also limit the time to short periods to help me keep my temper.

Think of them as "non-persons" and pretend they don't really exist. If they speak to you, filter their words through your inner B.S. detector; if they ask for facts, give them the facts, but if they ask your opinion, lie like a rug. It works for me.

Just go outside & smoke (if you smoke, if not, just stay away from them, chances are you are not in their will anyway)
Or just start drinking, it'll loosen you up a little!!
