The guidelines set by the Council on Graduate Education ask that all programs notify all candidates by April 15.

Many programs notify earlier. As a rule of thumb, give the committee at least a month after applications are due. Remember, we need to convene several committee meetings to make decisions.

And it does vary by discipline, and by institution. My program notifies our top candidates VERY early. As a matter of fact, I notified our top two candidates today. We won't be meeting for another two weeks to decide on the rest.
