First do a disk cleanup
uninstall any old prograhms that you don't need
get rid of the adware and spyware clean up your registery useing asoftware such as system mechanic http://www.system-mechanic.net/
Do a Disk defragmentation
turn off unnecessary programs running in the background such as the screensaver
You also can install more RAM Your gateway g6-400 uses pc 100 Sdram non-parity un-buffered.

I dought that upgradeing the processor from the pentium 2 slot 1 400Mhz will be much help

I looked up the specs on your computer, pretty good, but 512 of RAM is a little low for XP. If you have Vista on it, you need a gig, two gigs of RAM for it run right. I guess you are a gamer, so the graphics card, I don't know if that is a tad bit undersized too, maybe someone can suggest a good one. You can download this free and safe program called Advanced Windows Care, works really good at finding bottlenecks and correcting problems. Chow

You should add more information to the question so you can get better answers.

What I would reccomend is upgrading your RAM. If you only have a single core processor, I would also upgrade to a Dual-Core processor, especially if you use the computer for gaming.

Running Disk Defragmentor or Scandisk can also reveal problems or speed up performance.

Try UBUNTU. It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system. Plus you will get all of the software that you will ever need FREE!!!

If you have 256MB of RAM get a full version. If less, get XUBUNTU.

Delate files and programs that are not very important. Upgrade for higher RAM.
