If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:
1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2. The greater number of games won.
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

I copied this directly from the nhl's website. That's how they do it.

jayz fan is actually right. In the case that both teams are tied ii is the amount of goals scored not goal differential. However if that is also tied then they go by the head to head record. I dont know if that has ever happened where all three were the same.

1. amount of wins
2.amount of goals
3. head to head matchup

Well its pretty hard to do. They have to look at the team stats, player stats, and some other complicated stuff. So just because one team has won one game more than the other, the other team could have better stats and therefor be the higher ranked team.

They have a game in hand -one less game played. If they are even in GP then greater number of wins prevail. After that is head to head records and after that is goal differential.

The same way that the NBA, NFL, and MLB decide. It comes down to head-to-head competition.
