I got my navel pierced last July at the local mall in a reputable establishment. I can't speak for everyone, but this is my experience:
I purchased my navel ring there, for about $45. I believe this is standard procedure with business. A personal piercer/friend might have a different policy but whichever you choose it should be surgical steel or high quality metal and be disinfected properly.
Mine is classic top side. Can't speak for the other.
It hurt MUCH worse than having my ears pierced, like some deranged insect was boring into my belly! As I walked out of the mall it stung with every step. But, I didn't cry or make a scene.
I quickly found that I had to throw out any clothing that rode a little high on my hips because anything that touched it hurt, including tight shirts. It seemed to always be catching on everything, and laying on my belly was out of the question for around 2-3 weeks. After that, it got much better.
I always cleaned it just like I was instructed and had no problems with infection. I am now swapping my piercing with my mood, shopping for jewelry on ebay (great deals!) and I like it.
If I wear a heavy dangle for a while it will still get sore and a little scabby, but it clears up after a couple of days of wearing my original ring. Otherwise, no problems!
I hope you have a positive piercing experience.

Most places will require you to use their jewelry because they know it's sterile (germ free) and that it's surgical grade metal so you won't have an allergic reaction to it. Also most will start you out with a ring, not a barbell. Be sure to follow all of their instructions about keeping it clean and how to care for it afterwards or you can get a nasty infection. After it's healed, you can change it to your own choice of jewelry. It might be really hard the first time you take the ring out and change it, some people go back to the place that did the piercing and ask them to help the first time. Yeah it hurts a bit but that's to be expected. I had mine on the top of the belly button, I like that better because it's cute when you wear jewelry that has dangley stuff and that hangs down over the navel. Also, be sure you wear pants that are below your belly button or at least can be rolled down so they don't irritate it for a few days. Good luck.

Getting your belly button pierced can be a scary experience..
No you can not use your own barbel when you get it pierced for safety issues in case you get infected you can't sue the place.
Some places will make you get a ring instead of a barbel because of how the piercing is. I would go for the top part to be pierced because getting the bottom pierced (if not done correctly) could cause you to not have children because of your umbilical cord.
The average cost is about $50.00 plus a tip, which should be about 10.00.
Taking care of your new piercing is VERY essential. You must clean it three times a day, and rotate it at least twice a day. Some places tell you NOT to use salt water because of it closing up too fast around the ring, but doing it once in a while to keep infections away is the best idea. Also, to stop it from burning after rotating it you can use the same solution you use on your ears.
The pain is kind of intense at first, but like your ears is dulled rigth away. Wearing a shirt and sleeping might be uncomfortable for the first couple of nights. Avoid wool sweaters or spandex shirts or anything tight.
Be careful because it takes over a year for your belly to completely heal and you can't change the ring for 6-8 months.
Keeping it clean and not pulling on it are your best options
If an infection does occur see a dr IMMEDIATELY!!
Good luck!

It depends on the place youre getting it done, some places don't mind if you bring your own and some places want you to use their barbell ring (so they can get more money outta you). My belly piercing was I think $40. I think the regular way is definitely nicer because a lot of the belly rings have cool designs, dangling ones, shields, twists, that are really for the top piercing. However if you have an extremely flat stomach the one on the bottom looks really nice.
For me, it didn't hurt that much at all. It hurt for the 2 seconds of penetration. But theres the after pain... It's more like stomach area cramps and a slight tingling "hot" sensation near the piercing, but its very very bearable and not at all agonizing.
The person will tell you how to take care of it! Hope all goes well!

I had mine done about 4 years ago and it does not hurt. Feels like a pinch and your done. They will have you lay back in the chair and mark your belly button where the two goles will be, after you tell them yes that's where you want it they pierce it and your on your way. All in all it only takes like 5 minutes once your back there. They use their own hoop things that they say to come back and they'll change for you the first time. I didn't. I just did it myself. I think it costed around $55.00. Good luck. :o)

i have been given my done about 2 years in the past, and it grow to be fairly painful. at the same time as i found that it harm lots of my associates suggested it didnt harm a lot. I actually have highly severe soreness tolerance yet i wager it is deferent from human being to human being. on a scale in a million to ten i imagine it grow to be about a 7.5 or 8. whats solid is that it maximum the day that your get it pierced till you bump it or pull it (which will maximum in all probability take position in some unspecified time sooner or later) so its no longer aching all day on a daily basis. it highly a lot appears like in case you've been to pinch your abdomen button between 2 of your nails highly troublesome, thats what it appears like. in case you want it bypass for it! it sucks at the same time as it heals yet after it is healed it is so properly worth it. its been 2 years and that i nonetheless love mine. -solid success
