Because at the end of the day they still believe "the customer is always right" syndrome..those in the retail trade are "servants" to do their bidding, modern day slaves who should be seen and not heard, doing a job to service them alone...ive worked in retail for 25 years, and hate the general public, i do not treat staff in shops the same way people have treated me because i have some consideration...the public have come to expect 24/7 service, they get it, but dont realise we are customers too..retail work should be among the highest paid jobs in my belief because of the crap we put up with...

Back when most women had all day to do the shopping (dad at work, kids at school), they had the time to be most polite. There was less traffic, less stress, less people in the stores.
I have been a very polite customer, only to be treated rudely by highly paid cashiers and clerks.

Maybe they have terminal cancer, their husband just got arrested for drugs and they are nearly bankrupt. Their very young children are acting out because of the stress and they are just returning from the school where they had a meeting with the teacher and principal, who blamed them for everything.
Everyone has problems, grow a thicker skin.

Not only are they rude to the staff, they are rude to the other customers! I just assume those people think they are far superior to everyone else, and their needs come before others.

because they probably had a long hard day. busy supermarkets with very bright lights in them screaming kids pushing and shoving long cues and people chatting in the middle of the isles can make anyone lose it but its still no excuse

u know something i agree with you. i used to be one of those low paid workers. the funny thing is this. i am always polite to the workers like cashiers and stockers. how ever i find that the cashiers are nice to the snobby people and some one who is nice to them like myself they get nasty with. when i say have a nice day to one of them they just don't reply. how ever the nasty person in front of me they were going out of their way to be nice to them. i just moved here to west palm beach. that might have something to do with it.

because a lot of them dont think of checkout staff as humans and believe they are only there to serve and dont have lives or feelings.
