Yes he can. Drew Brees is only 5'10 with average speed but yet is a nfl star. Troy Smith I think will be better than vick he will probably be the 3rd most effective running qb in the league behind young and vick but maybe the most accurate and smartest of the group in throwing from the pocket.

The ONLY way Troy Smith will be successful at QB in the NFL is if he gets into the right system. The NFL is pretty much a league dominated by the dropback passer. Besides Mike Vick, and NOW Vince Young, Smith just cant dominate for a couple reasons. He doesnt have 4.4 speed and an arm like Vick, and he isnt as tall and fast as Vince Young. Young is a freak athlete and so is Vick. I dont see Troy becoming a star in the NFL. Truthfully, I see Chris Leak being a better passer than Troy, and I am not just saying that because of the NC game. All the stuff he did in college wont translate to the pros. He'll probably make it as a backup but I wont be surprised at all if Troy ends up being switched to wide receiver. Of course, all of this is opinionated and hopefully TS can prove me wrong but I just dont see him doing it.

troy smith. Its sort of a tough question. Many people doubt he will become anything but it's to hard to tell from the start. Very rare do you see someone dominate as a rookie. Ecspecially at quarterback. But yes i think Smith will be an all star. Why, because he has the right mentalilty. Ive spent many years of my life analzing quaterbacks in highschool and college and found that the most succesful quaterbacks are the ones that have patience and drop back in the pocket. BUt thats what makes Smith different. He has what it takes to put the ball where he wants, but he also has the ability to run aaround in the pocket and even pick a couple yards up. Its so rare two see the run and pass combo. He is kinda of like vick but better. Vick is faster but not as accurate. Thats why i think smith will become a star in the nfl. As long as he can stay healthy of course

troy smith had a million things going against him.
vision: he completely lacks it. he has no ability to read blitzes or mix and match coverages. he will need at least three years under a veteran qb to get in sync with the nfl style
speed: he isn't that fast. he panics too much and doesn't tuck the ball in enough when he commits.
size: this is his main problem. at 5'10, he has a huge physical barrier to overcome. his size will result in an inordinate amount of batted down passes and quackers.
overall experience: i don't consider him a true three year starter. he couldn't carry his team in college, he won't be able to now. he was surrounded with the most star power in the ncaa, yet he still had god awful games against any ranked opponents this year.

he goes second round to the browns and starts at the end of the year, because the browns should be in the afl.

No, Smith did terrible against a defense that had a NFL style blitz scheme. Sure, he destroyed all the teams in the Big Ten but they were vanilla. The championship game showed that because the Bucks were supposedly one of the best defenses but they lost because they didn't blitz Leak or put pressure on him, a lot like the rest of the Big Ten defenses. Smith can't read a defense and thinks that he is going to be the greatest. I guarantee that he is a bust unless he learns that some defenses actually blitz between now and September.

It seems like the ones that get passed over for Heisman still have something to prove-Peyton Manning, Vince Young, etc..

The ones that win usually become "cursed." I just think they get comfortable. Of the last few QB's to win heisman and go NFL, have you heard much success from:
Danny Wuerffel Chris Weinke Eric Crouch Jason White (still in Ncaa)? Carson Palmer is decent, Leinart is still young, but generally, i subscribe to the curse theory. It has already started to sting Troy Smith. It was as if suddenly, he stopped being a champion. Now he is already trying to court the draft to the Browns and stay at home, which makes me feel like he is further trying to stay comfortable, and has lost his fire. If i was new to the NFL, i would be wanting to play for a championship caliber team. As an investor, I dont see his stock being worth anything in 2-3 years.

Go saints!

I think that Troy Smith could become a star quarterback in the NFL, but he won't. The two big games that he played in (Michigan and the BIG ONE) he had bad stats. He can't be great in the NFL if he can't play well in big games.

I'm not sure. Peyton played in the SEC. The OU quarterback that won the Hiesman didn't even get drafted.

The Florida game the only game I saw him play. Big 10 looked pretty lame during the Bowl games. Even Wisconcin was lucky to scrape by Arkansas.

I think so. I am usually a pretty good judge of these things, I predicted Drew Brees would be a star and he might go around the same spot. 1st pick of the 2nd round Brees went. I think Brady Quinn might be a tad bit overrated.

It is hard to tell now, but he will definitely need to get used to blitzing defenses like UF showed him if he wants to become a star. This is especially the case if he wants to play in Cleveland where they share the same division as the tough defenses in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and the improving pass rush in Cincinnati.

He also needs to learn to see downfield a little better under pressure. We'll see if he rises or flops, but as of now I have my doubts.
