In a recent episode of Mythbusters that my boyfriend and I watched, the myth was that an airman back in WWII (or I, can't remember) fell out of his turret and fell 22,000 feet onto the glass roof of a French train station. However, just before he hit the roof, a bomb blew inside. The explosion cushioned the airman.

So, to test this, Tori and Kari disassembled an airbag to use as the "explosion". Inside, they found a penny.

My question is this: was the penny just there by some coincidence, or did the manufacturers put it there? If it was intentional, why?

Thanks, all!!

Just a weird coincidence.

After many years of working on and around vehicles, I've seen my fair share of weird things in vehicles from assembly workers whether it was by accident or intentional.

One I remember was a cup with flaps cut into it put into an air conditioning duct so when turned on high, it would spin around and rattle and make all kinds of noise. That's about the funniest one I've ever seen, but I've seen many things such as extra parts behind trim panels that likely fell into the vehicle on the assembly line and other things.

I wonder if a penny could just possibly be the perfect size piece of copper needed to use as a part, similar to a washer with nuts and bolts...?

Just saw the repeat of the show and the penny was between the airbag and front cover. If the car was in a crash the penny would have easily killed the person. Someone at the airbag plant is either on their last day or just a ******. The police should have been called and the manufacturer and NTSB notified.
