Vietnam was dividing in 1954 because the French lost control. They tried to gain control over a colony they lost during WW2. Instead of giving Vietnam their independence, France wanted to have the control it once had. With the Communists beating the French badly, they forced the Vietnamese to split their country for a period of time. After this period of time they would have a re vote to unite the two countries.

Vietnam was divided in 1954 by the Geneva Accords. The Geneva Accords officially ended the first Indochina War (or bettern known as the French-Indochina War) and was to temporarily split North and South Vietnam until a countrywide vote in 1957 to determine control over the whole country. Common knowledge knows that North Vietnam was controlled by communism and South Vietnam was controlled by democracy.

South Vietnamese President Diem, backed by the United States, refused to participate in the the vote. This lead to increased U.S. involvement and then the Second Indochina War (better known as the Vietnam War). The rest of the information is for another question.
