Move closer to the wireless access point, or move the access point closer to you.

Eliminate possible points of interference: 2.4Ghz phones are the worst, but microwaves near the access point will cause problems too.

Change the channel on your wireless access point, your neighbor or house across the street may be using the same channel. (consult your wireless access point's manual for instructions on how to do that).

Purchase a wireless repeater if moving closer to the access point fixes your problem, but you can't stay there...

Repeaters are little boxes that plug into the wall and simply re-broadcast your wireless so that you get a solid signal all over your house. No wires, just an outlet is needed.

Sometimes when you too close to an access point the wireless frequency will actually miss you wireless network adapter in your computer. Try moving away from the access point, then closer. There has to be a spot where the signal is just right. Halogen lights, flourencent, lights, cell phones, cordless phones--believe it or not--pine trees. Pine needles resonate at the same frequency as cordless phone ans wireless signals--2.4GHz.

OK
First the wireless network you are using is legal right ?? If it is then you need to verify the settings for the WEP ENCRYPTION , on both the laptop and the router it self. Then verify that the channel you are using is the same on the laptop

Wouldn't be a netgear would it? If the above answers don't help and it's a Netgear then return it while it's under warranty, ASAP!
