A realistic answer please.
I find it hard to believe so many people would "die for a country" that would barely remember them after they are gone.

OH PLEASE
Enough with the freedom BS. Its not that I'm not appreciative, its that who wakes up in their right mind and says
"Instead of going to college, I am going to be shipped off to a foreign country and kill not only 'terrorists' but civilians and maybe die in the process"
CRAZY. And you know what THEY ARE NOT REMEMBERED. You hear "Another American soldier killed in Iraq today", but THATS IT. Nothing about their life, their mind, their family. Its just, "another one of us dead". That is NOT remembering.

because they're not doing it to be remembered, they're doing it because it's a cause they believe in.

Maybe because the people that serve believe they have a purpose in life , are loved, will be remembered, see the future as a brighter place , care about their family and home.
How's that for realistic?
Hows this for truth - I have sorry had 3 sons
1 died in a car accident 7 miles from home going to work.
1 served proudly in the Army and in Iraq then came home
1 is getting ready for college
All were and are loved equally. Death doesn't know distance or occupation but it still hurts like hell to grieve.
What I find hard to believe is the way so many people look down on the people that serve.
But I know "you support the troops , you are just curious".

Some people feel the need to fight for something to believe in. Its the challenge, the good and the ugly of the job.
Most soldiers don't join thinking they are ready to die for a country, they join to experience the lifestyle and the adventures that comes with the job. They have a need to feel that directly or indirectly they may have made a difference. The country may not remember but the people around these men and women will forever. The army is the only family you will ever voluntarily be part of.

personal beliefs, work ethic, chain of command, The soldiers did not choose this fight. They are doing what they are told. Our government put them there. This is what creates a strong army. Every soldier chooses to be there. They signed up for it knowing they could go to war. When they finish there service then they can decide to stay or leave. America needs bright people in the millitary. With out the ingenuity of the American people we would not be the country we are today. To anybody that does not like the U.S.A get the F**k out.

Clearly you have no comprehension of the value of the freedom you enjoy in this country. To serve your country is among the most noble choices one could make. It isn't easy and not everyone who wants to can. Plenty of folks die with barely anyone remembering them, to die for your country whether you are remembered or not does not detract from the service you performed, and I'll wager more people will remember them than any ordinary person. Memory fades for all but a select few throughout history, and those folks are either great heros or infamous monsters.

A lot of "smart" people do "dumb" things. The human ego is the most insane thing ever.
Also, a lot of "dumb" people are actually very aware.
The ego doesn't like to hear the truth either.
Some people posting here don't actually understand that it's the calm, peaceful people who don't jump at the chance to go to war who are the ones who really bring in freedom.
If the U.S. was full only of people who wanted to "fight for freedom", they'd be worse off than any given country in the Middle East.
Once you have a critical mass of people who refuse to go along with the charade, real freedom starts appearing.
The types of people we're seeing so much of today out of the U.S. (and the world does know that there are some great people there, but the news keeps showing us differently) would fit right into the Dark Ages.
You can't change people's beliefs. They'll continue until they figure things out themselves.

Duty and pride. They don't go to die for their country they go to protect and need be kill for what they believe in which is democracy and freedom. Imagine living in a really misoginist culture or one that allowed slavery or one without the freedoms we have. Imagine what your life would be like if the muslim radicals had the world the way they wanted it. Would you fight against that? Just because the war wasn't lead right doesn't mean it wasn't the right thing to do.

Mr. Tiny I can see that you dont have the balls to go to army. Dont ruin a very good question.
Sweetheart it is the love for your country, it has always been like that through history, thats why we have heros that are remembered and respected. If it wasnt for the love of a country every nation that exists today wouldnt be here like the Asyrians who were dominating the world once. This administration screwed up everthing thats not how it is supposed to be. One should serve for his country, its a duty.

Probably because they believe in the cause. More people were shot in Washington DC last year then Iraq and there are still cops going to work everyday. They believe in a cause bigger then themselves instead of just worrying about their own post-college salaries. It's honorable really.

That sounds like something John Kerry would say.
Don't think of it as people are throwing away their lives to fight of a non grateful country. Think of it as someone who is risking what they believe in for you to sit here online and make comments like this.
Those who are out there risking their lives are doing it for all of us. And although I do not agree with the war in Iraq and man (or womans) gotta do what a man ( or woman's) gotta do. I take it you don't have anyone close to you fighting for your freedom, do you?
Please don't take anything offensive, its just how it is.

Because he or she realizes that it is just that type of person that is best suited to serve his or her country - a person that is willing to sacrifice a comfortable and peaceful life in order to allow others, whether in Iraq or America, to live such a life (even if such an effort ends up failing, it is the effort that counts, not the result).
