Intelligent design is an argument for the existence of God, based on the premise that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection." Its leading proponents, all of whom are affiliated with the Discovery Institute claim that intelligent design is a scientific theory that stands on equal footing with, or is superior to, current scientific theories regarding the evolution and origin of life.
The scientific community states unequivocally that intelligent design is not science; many scientists and at least one major organization of science teachers have also termed it pseudoscience, and some have termed it junk science. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has stated that intelligent design "and other claims of supernatural intervention in the origin of life" are not science because they cannot be tested by experiment, do not generate any predictions, and propose no new hypotheses of their own. Intelligent design advocate Michael Behe has also testified, under oath, that there is no scientific evidence in support of the intelligent design hypothesis that has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
In Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District (2005), a United States federal court ruled that a public school district requirement for science classes to teach that intelligent design is an alternative to evolution was a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. United States District Judge John E. Jones III ruled that intelligent design is not science and is essentially religious in nature.
------
The real intent of the Intelligent Design movement is not to introduce new science, nor the objective search for new truths, but to attack the theory of evolution at all costs and to attempt to reintroduce religion into public schools under the guise of science. How do we know this? Because an internal document from the IDiots own organization explicitly states so.

Intelligent Design is just another incarnation of Creationism.
Whenever you think the final nail is driven into the coffin of Creationism, rather than come up with some compelling evidence to pull the nails out, the creationists just change coffins.
The main thrust of ID is that life is too complex to have evolved, this is despite the fact that life exists at all levels of complexity, from a few strands of proteins (Prions) to complex organisms such as humans. They dismiss evidence to explain why apes and humans are so similar and attest that bones of early hominid species such as Neanderthals are in fact either modern apes or arthritic humans.
What they are really demonstrating is that evolution is not simple enough for them to understand, and that they would rather a solution which gives them a finite answer, ie, God has created this, now just stop thinking and enjoy it.

Religious fundamentalists believe that the Earth and everything on it was created by God just 6000 years ago. They refuse to accept the principles of Darwinian evolution and vehemently oppose the teaching of evolutionary science in public schools. In order to further their religious agenda, they have manufactured a pseudo-controversy, claiming that evolution is a flawed theory and that living organisms are just too complex to have evolved naturally -- that life must have been divinely created according to God's "intelligent design." These extremely conservative Christians assert that the biblical version of creation deserves to be taught as an "alternative" life-science in America's classrooms.
Obviously, authentic scientists and all people who love the truth seriously disagree. Religion has no legitimate place in America's classrooms. Western civilization discarded religious superstition after 1500 years of the dark ages, the horrors of the Catholic Inquisition, and the terror of the Protestant witch hunts. Modern people have been enlightened by science and freed by democracy and will (hopefully) never again accept superstitious ignorance nor the religious terror it invariably engenders.
Personally, I believe such extreme religious fundamentalists are literally insane. Their child-like faith-based thinking and naive acceptance of unsubstantiated belief has actually damaged their minds to the point where they can no longer discriminate between that which is real and that which is imaginary. That pretty much defines insane.

It is an attempt by religious factions that feel threatened by the theory of evolution to undermine the teaching of evolution science in classrooms. Basically, it introduces the idea of the impossibility of life as we know it arising by natural selection and instead uses such concepts as "irreducible complexity" to make a case against random mutation and natural selection, claiming that once a system reaches a given level of complexity, it can no longer be explained by Darwin's theory. This, of course, doesn't prove that whatever isn't Darwin's belongs to God, but the ID contingent makes this leap of faith in the realm of science, which, of course, undermines the very nature of the chain of evidence required for the formulation of scientific theories. It is basically a skirmish against scientific method based on religion and politics, two things that absolutely should be kept out of science but, in reality, never are.
I won't go as far as some and say that religion has no place in the classroom, but I will say that it has no place in the study of hard science. Intelligent Design, if it is to be taught in schools, should be taught as philosophy and religion, NOT science.

It is a codeword for "Creationism" the belief that Our Lord created this universe as opposed to EVOLUTION the theory proposed by Darwin. In order to enter the debate in a Trojan Horse Right Wing zealots have coined the word "intelligent design" to confuse tender minds.

Intelligent design is the belief that the universe was created by God and not through blind chance. That's the short answer - here's a search link for you so you can get more details.

It's a belief that the earth has been literally created in 6 days by God, like in the bible. They called creationists, and they believe that the Earth is only about 10,000 years old, and they don't believe in evolution. They belive that only a higher power has created everything on earth, and that humans and dinosaurs once coexisted, some 10,000 years ago.
Basically they take bible literally.

Intelligent design is another term for creationism. Its is the belief that the work was created by one or many 'gods' and it needed their intellect to get everything to work right.
The opposition would be evolutionary theory which states that the development of the world we live in was from gradual change.

Intelligent design is the design of a product; to be made with the least amount of work; with the least amount of material; with the least amount of expense; in the least amount of time; which has aesthetic value; and which product uses the least amount of energy to do the same work than any other product in that class.

its a broad term almost meaningless, everything from creationism to evolution could be considered intelligent design, depends on who you ask.
