They were named Motley Crue because Mick Mars's old band, White Horse, Called them a "Motley (meaning diverse in character) looking crew." The original spelling of the name was "Mottley Kru", but it became "Motley Crue" after Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee joined. By the way, remember that this is the Internet and anyone can say that they did things without really doing them, so I wouldn't trust the person that said that she hung out with Motley Crue.

Because they were a motley crue. That is what people would say about them. I used to hang with them when they were first playing in Hollywood. Crazy times!!
It's true, I could tell you some wild stories. I grew up in Orange County Calf. about an hour away from Hollywood. I hung out with alot of bands in that time !!!!!!!!!

A court jester wore multi-coloured clothes called a motley.A large band of shipmates travelling together to cause trouble wearing mottled colours instead of a uniform would be called a motley crew.Crue with the accent over it is pronounced the same as crew, but it makes the band name stand apart from the common phrase.
