My daughter's name is Kalena (ka-LEE-na), which is the Hawiian equivalent of Karen. I wanted something a little unusual (without being too weird), and I really liked the way it sounded. And, as an added bonus, Karen happens to my mom's name. So in a way, my daughter has her grandma's name and yet, she still has her own unique name.

Some other Hawaiian names:
Kalei (kah-LAY-ee) .......'the flower wreath' or 'the beloved'
Kamea (kah-MAY-ah)......'the one and only'
Kanani (kah-NA-nee)......'beautiful lady'
Kai (kay).......'deep blue seas'
Kalani (kah-LAH-nee) .........paraphrase of 'the sky' or 'the chieftan' ..........variations on this one are Kaloni, Kalanie, Kailani
Kani (KAH-nee)...... 'sound' (the Hawaiian equivalent of Sandy)

lol Maybe I'm getting carried away! I'll stop before I overwhelm you and wear out my welcome! And obviously, I'm stuck in the 'k' section of the baby name book! If you need more, you can email me.

(Just FYI: The Hawaiian alphabet only has 12 letters; the five vowels A,E, I, O, U and 7 consonants H, K, L, M, N, P, and W.)

Most of the names in these answers are NOT hawaiian, and some that are are being mispronounced, which is odd considering that the people offering them claim that is their own name. Maybe that IS their name, but if it pronounced the way they are saying then they only THINK it's hawaiian.
And "O'ahu", are they kidding?

Are you or your child's father of hawaiian ancestry? If not, maybe it would much more meaningful to choose a name from your family's own heritage.

If your are stuck on a hawaiian name then my advice is to get a hawaiian name book or go to one of the hawaiian name websites, not all of the names are always correct on them, but ALOT more accurate than most of what I see on here!

Good Luck.

For a complete list of Hawaiian names, their meanings, and their popularity in Hawaii, see the link below. It's nice to see how commonly used the names actually are. The general (non-Hawaiian) baby name books sometimes come up with oddball "Hawaiian names", that might be Hawaiian words or place names but are not generally used as names in Hawaii (like "Oahu"!).

In the Hawaiian language, perhaps because it is oral, it is said names carry significant mana (spiritual power) and when spoken aloud, the 'olelo (language, word, utterance), that power, can set events into motion or cause change. That's why one has to be careful about selecting the right name; names were, and still are, bestowed only after serious and careful consideration.
