In particular I am talking about the New Jersey Devils (NHL team). I know its a franchise, but shouldn't they consider their religious fans as well? Their mascot is the horned guy as well (pretty scary looking). And even though its not meant that way still we are talking about naming a team after the man who rules the underworld. Is it appropriate?

Its appropriate, after al its a free country. If religious fans dont like it, well they don't have to.
I think that NJ should get miroslav Satan on the team.

Since when did being politically correct get involved in sports? Some teams have had their mascots/team names for a while, and it's only taken as offensive if you want it to be.

It's just like every-other PC situation in the world...It's interpretation. Some people believe in it, others hate it, and some are in-between.

Besides, it's already been proven that you cna successfully argue the Indian nicknames...Look at Florida STate University, they are still known as the Seminoles because they say it represents the Indian group that once resided on the lands. It worked for them...So even if it gets brought up as an issue in sports with the Indians and Redskins, they simply can say..."Well, Indians were once on these lands too, so we're simply honoring them as well."

As for the Devils, it will never change...It's all what you make of it, and it's only a team name. Just having a team nickname of Devils doesn't mean you are the Anti-Christ or have no faith in God or anything of the sort. It's only a name.

The Jersey Devils were named after a creature (The Jersey Devil) that supposedly lived in the Jersey Pine Barrens.
The creature had no relationship to Satan or any other religious icon.
It's just a name that is associated with some famous Jersey folklore

lol, as soon as I saw the question I knew this had to do with the Devils. The justification for the name is the mythical story of the Jersey Devil in the Pine Barrens. Weird? Yes. But it beats the heck out of rooting for the New Jersey Swamp Dragons, lol, GO DEVILS!!

The New Jersey Devil is actually part of a folk legend in that state. It is/was supposedly a demon-like creature who would steal the children of mothers who failed to be vigilant and attend to their babies. This legend was commonly accepted as fact during the pre-colonial and colonial eras among settlers. It's a part of local culture and history and has little to do with the devil you're thinking of.

The Jersey Devils are a remnant of folklore from the time the area was first settled. I think the logo is pretty sharp. Have they made a deal with the devil? All those cups...

first off if you believe in god you have to believe in satan (the devil) its balance, yin and yang. so it's actually more of a religious name than 99% of sports teams.

and the new jersey hockey team got their mascot from local folklore of the new jersey devil.

Funny, I don't hear christians being so anal about a sports team that's named after Satan.

Why don't you petition to get rid of Miroslav Satan since his name is the equivelant of Lucifer in English? You people need a hobby....

Well its just the team name and the mascot. I guess if the team is being promoted they do not mention anything about evil. Interesting nickname though.

It's from the legend of the Jersey Devil, nothing "Satan" related. And the hockey player pronounces his name "Sha-tan" though it would make for a good jersey.
