Have everyone come in costume, dressed as Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn, James Dean, Dorothy from the wiz.You could some standees of these characters.
Download the era music on your mp3 player or cds, as they music is so important to a good party.
Have a red carpet entrance....complete with paparrazi snapping pics.
Rent a video projector & big screen. Show a vintage fav movie, or make your own, edit it and play it. You could do a silent pic, I bet that would be hilarious.
You could put the name of an actor/actress on a paper, and tape to to your guests back, and see how long it takes everyone to figure out who they are.

Our prom committee was looking at that theme for our prom. Some of the ideas that came up where:
- A red carpet and with "photographers" taking pictures as people come in and around the party. (This way you get pictures of your party and you have them dress in time period appropriate clothing.)
- Handing out plastic emmys as goodies (I don't know where you can get them though)
- You could have people dress vintage, or as old hollywood couples.
- Have a live orchestra/band playing music (depends on budget, if you can get them to play the music you like, etc.)
- You can also use martini glasses to serve the soda, water, etc.
