The theory that the Gulf Stream could disappear, leading to an ice age, has some credence as being possible in the future. That it could happen in a matter of a few days as the movie shows is considered much less likely. The theory that the professor character presents at the start of the movie - that global warming could lead to an ice age in the next few hundred years - is more plausible.

Having said all that, most scientists believe that continued global warming will not trigger another ice age, and will just make it hotter.

And on your last point, the sudden increase in sea levels depicted in the movie is one of its least plausible parts. I think they labelled it as a "storm surge" caused by the mega-storms that then got snapfrozen in place, which maybe explains what happens to NYC, but there's just not enough water in the sea for it to have happened everywhere as was implied.

No, it can not happen. Events like the ones in the movie would take longer to happen, not hours or weeks, but years or decades. Anyway, even in the lowest freezing temperatures it's impossible that a person could freeze to death in a matter of 3 seconds.
There was a documentary on Discovery explaining how it can never happen what explained in this Hollywood movie and many others.

Many of the natural disasters and strange occurrences can and may happen, but to a lesser degree. The events they talk about would take a long longer to happen and there was a lot of drama and Hollywood added to make it seem more horrifying.

Yes. Movies are a good source for predictions of what's going to happen. Movie makers are careful, serious people, and are not really interested in sensation scenes just for the sake of getting you to buy tickets.

The stuff you learn in school -- forget about it! It's so complicated and borrrr..ing

I think the flood of NYC in that move was related to the breaking up of the north polar cap?

the movie is based on the theoretical concept of a flash ice age, however it is merely a theory and the movie clearly glorifies the concept for cheap thrills.

The big storm with descending air in the middle getting colder as it descends? No, not a chance.

I have no science to back it up but I think it is possible.I remember winters being much worse when I was a kid.I remember summers being more stormy.I do think it is possible.I think either our kids or their kids will see an event.Maybe not as severe but something has to equalize it.

OH I believe it can. They got the idea from the movie from somewhere. Global warming...causes polar ice caps to melt and there you go...just like that movie
