Your laptop should be able to use both connections - or at least be connected to both it'll pick which ever it can get to the internet first - automatically

If you open your network connections folder (under Start/Control Panel / Network Connections)... do you have two or more icons?

If you see one that is for your ethernet connection (probably called LAN Connection): right click on it and choose "Repair"

That will restart your NIC, clear your DNS and IP, and renew your IP address. This fixes about 90% of network problems.

You need to set your network card connection to DHCP automatically detect settings. This way, your connection will automatically assign you an IP address.

Read instructions here:

Oh, you CAN NOT run both wireless and ethernet connection at the same time. It will not work. I have tried it before on my laptop, it will not work. Due to IRQ settings only one piece of network hardware can be used at a time. So if you are using ethernet, turn off your wireless, if you are using wireless turn off your ethernet by disconnecting the cable.

One has two ways to connect to Internet (broadband). One is Wireless, one is Wired (ethernet cable).

Just making sure when you say ethernet, I'm assuming you're connecting it wired?

You may have to release and renew the IP addresses. See source.
