Most of us will try to use a tampon at some time, so it's important to know how to insert a tampon the right way. It might seem tricky at first, but after trying several times, tampon insertion becomes as easy as putting on a glove.
The key is to RELAX! Worrying about it may make you tense, making insertion even harder. Read the package instruction leaflet carefully, and practice inserting a tampon during your period when your flow is moderate to heavy. The tampon should glide in easily. Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon applicator with a water-based gel for the first few tries can also be helpful. And by the way, don't use a petroleum-based jelly.
To watch the "how to" video, click here.. This video requires Windows Media Player. If you do not have this plug-in, click here It's free.
These instructions should make first time tampon insertion easier:
First, look at the tampon. The larger outer tube that holds the tampon itself at the very end is the top – this is the part that is inserted into the vagina. Think – top = tampon. The thinner inside tube is the one where the string is showing. This is the inner or bottom tube – the part that is used to push the tampon in.
Wash your hands. Stand or sit in a comfortable position. Sit on the toilet with your legs apart and lean slightly forward, or try standing with your knees slightly bent. Standing with one foot up on the tub also works for some girls. Most of the time, you'll end up putting in a tampon while you're on the toilet – so that's a good place to start.
Look at the tampon applicator again – you'll see some ridges, this is the finger grip, on the larger tube. With the thumb and middle finger of one hand, hold the applicator lightly on the outer insertion tube at the grip location, with the larger outer tube facing up toward your body and the thinner inner tube pointing down toward the floor.
With your other hand, gently separate the folds of skin around the vaginal opening. Put the tip of the larger outer tube of the tampon applicator in the opening of the vagina. Are you still breathing?! Don't forget to! It helps you stay relaxed.
The vagina slants upward and toward the back. So, aim the tampon toward a point low on the small of your back (the curved area of your lower back). Now, take a deep breath, let it out, and relax. Then gently push the larger, outer tube of the applicator into the vagina. Stop when your thumb and middle finger are touching the vaginal opening.
NOTE: For flushable (cardboard) applicator tampons, ease in the applicator by slightly twisting or rotating it from side to side. Don't twist a plastic applicator, this slides in best when pushed straight in at the proper angle.
Next, put your index finger (or a finger on the other hand) at the end of the inner, thinner tube (where the cord comes out). Push this inner tube slowly until it's completely inside the larger tube. This pushes the tampon out of the applicator and into your vagina. Move your finger from the end so that the string hangs free. Keep your thumb and middle finger on the outer tube grip.
Now, holding the tubes (that are now inside each other) firmly but gently remove them from the vagina. (The cardboard tubes can be flushed away.) (IF USING TAMPAX PEARL PLASTIC OR TAMPAX COMPAK, DO NOT FLUSH THE PLASTIC APPLICATOR OR WRAPPER.) Place the used plastic applicator back into the discreet wrapper or wrap it in toilet paper and throw it in the trash.) If the tampon is in correctly, you shouldn't feel it at all. If it feels uncomfortable, it's probably not placed far enough into your vagina. The uncomfortable feeling comes from the tampon rubbing against the muscle at the opening of the vagina. If this happens, remove the tampon and use a fresh one, trying to insert it a little deeper into the vagina.
To remove a tampon, relax your muscles. Slowly and gently pull the removal string downward at the same angle you used to insert the tampon. Don’t worry about the string – it’s securely sewn throughout the tampon. If you feel discomfort while removing the tampon, it probably means you didn’t need to change it because it hadn’t absorbed enough yet. You may either want to wear a tampon longer next time or use a lower absorbency.
*hope it helps!!!

I got this stuff from this website: http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/tampon.html
They have diagrams too.
Good Luck
It is important to first learn how to use a tampon and then, just relax! The more you relax, the easier the insertion will be. When you are nervous, your muscles tense up, making insertion even harder. For your first time, you may want to try using a tampon when your menstrual flow is heavy; this should allow the tampon to glide in more easily. Choose the smallest size tampon for the first time. By following these simple guidelines, and those that come with your package of tampons, your first experience with tampons should be easy.
Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Some women prefer to place one leg on the toilet seat or tub, while others prefer to squat down. After you find a position that is most comfortable for you, hold the tampon with the fingers that you write with. Hold the middle of the tampon, at the spot where the smaller, inner tube inserts into the larger, outer tube. Make sure the string is visible and pointing away from your body.
With your other hand, open the labia (the folds of skin around the vaginal opening) and position the tampon in the vaginal opening.
Gently push the tampon into the opening, aiming for the small of your back. Stop when your fingers touch your body and the applicator, or outer tube, is completely inside the vagina.
Once the applicator or outer tube is inside of you, use your index finger to push the inner tube (the tube where the removal string is connected) through the outer tube.
Once the inner tube is all the way in, use your thumb and middle finger to remove the applicator or outer tube. Make sure that the string hangs outside of the vaginal opening. Later, when you are ready to remove the tampon, hold the string and gently pull it downward until the entire tampon is out.
If the tampon is inserted correctly, you should not feel it. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, you may have inserted the tampon incorrectly or the tampon may not be placed far enough into the vagina. If this happens, just remove the tampon and start again with a new tampon. Remember that practice makes perfect. If you don't get it on the first try, your second try will most likely be successful. Instead of getting frustrated and giving up, relax and try again!

In a tampon box there will be instruction and diagrams. Its easyer for the first time to get one that says teen on the box, they are smaller. When you read the instructions it is good to have a handheld mirror so you can look down there and see exactly where it is supposed to go. But you will unwrap it and throw away the wrapper, then you will sit on the toilet and try to relax. Insert it into the vagina. It may hurt the first couple times but that is okay. Then push the bottom of the tampon and the remove the applicator. Throw the applicator away

This is hard for a lot of women
1.Take the tampon out of the wrapper.
2. Look for the little rings or ridges. They are close to where the two pieces of plastic intersect.
3. Put your thumb and forefinger or however many fingers you need around the ring.
4. It helps if you prop your foot up on the toilet or counter or something. Reeelaaax.
5. Push the tampon inside until your fingers are touching your body. The rings should be right outside the entrance of your vagina.
6. Push down on the top plunger part of the tampon. Both applicators should slide off.
Make sure that both applicators are in your hand and not inside of you. If the tampon is painful then you just didn't push it inside far enough. You can put your fingers in there and push the tampon up yourself(trust me it won't get lost in there) or you can take it out and try again.
I hope this helps.

read the instructions on the box. Make sure you relax. The best advise i got when i started using them was to put a bit of Vaseline on the bit to help ease it in. id also recommend wearing a panty liner for the first couple of times until you get used to how often you need to change them, saves against getting your underwear or your clothes marked. Start off with the mini range most brands have them, there designed for beginners.

Panties down, lubricate yourself if you are dry down there with
water, unwrap tampon, put the tampon up till you feel the string &
push as far as you without hurting yourself, and all you should
feel is the string hanging down. Pull up your panties, wash hands
then walk around, if it hurts you've not hit the right hole, went in
crooked, so practice you do fine. But, do not leave it in if it hurts.
I for one could never wear them, and when I did @ the cottage I
was on my period for 6 weeks, so carefull.

its not as hard or scary as you think. id suggest you try using tampax pearl, they have a plastic applicator so they slide right in. their great for beginners, and very comfy. ive been getting my period for about 4 yrs and i still use that kind. if you put it in right you will not feel anything at all. you'll know you did something wrong if you feel any pain. just read the paper that comes in the box that will help answer your question. when you put it in aim it back and stop when your fingers touch your body. dont try putting one in if you dont have your period, it will hurt when you try taking it out. if a tampon ever hurts when your taking it out you either put it in wrong or it isnt full yet. never leave one in for over 8 hours, you can get tss. tss can kill you if you dont treat it. dont worry about that though its very rare.
