It's an HP laptop, and I have a power extension to the wall, but how do I charge it to use it on the road?

The battery recharges the moment you plug the power extension to the wall...check the battery meter on the laptop to see if it's fully recharged...remember battery life is only good for 1 - 1 1/2 hours depending on the battery and the laptop, that's why we always carry a spare.

A couple of options:

You can purchase a 12v invertor that will plug into your car's power connection or cig lighter port. The invertor will convert your car's 12v power to a standard 110v household outlet. Then you plug your laptop power connection into that. They're about $50 and are about the size of a paperback.

You can purchase a special power adapter from HP or other manufacturers that will plug directly into your car's power connection or cig lighter. They can vary in price depending on your laptop.

I did a quick search online and found that BestBuy, Circuit City, and RadioShak all sell them.

If in a car, use a power inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter plug. Example is shown at the below link.

Stores like Wal-Mart, etc. sell a product that plug into your cigarette lighter in your car and in turn you can plug in a normal (2 or 3-prong) cord into it.
