Generally an employer is not going to allow a leave of absence from work for a vacation. If you are faced with a serious health issue the federal government requires certain employers to offer FMLA to their employees but that is only if either you as the employee or a family member has a serious health issue.

You might not have a job when you come back but you can definitely do whatever you want. But seriously I read an article in GQ last yr about this, some guy told his boss he needed some months off to do such and such, suprisingly the boss was cool. I think that they suggested that if you do this to make sure you give plenty of notice and give your boss the time to find a replacement for you while you're gone.

You would have to negotiate that with your employer.
