Why all the horror stories about dry cleaners ruining silk? Any tips to avoid this?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I have it stuck in my head somehow that people often have bad experiences with dry cleaners & silk. "They ruined my blouse..." What gives?

I just got a really nice silk shirt and I'm sort of afraid to take it to the cleaners. Any advice on how to find a good one or whatever?

You can actually handwash the silk stuff yourself, then iron and it will look new
