There are two places on the baby's head where the bones are yet to be fully formed. These 'soft spots' (which are in fact covered by a very tough membrane), are the fontanelles - the smaller one at the back is tiangular and closes up in six to eight weeks, but the diamond shaped fontanelle at the front can take up to 18 months to close. Sometimes a soft swelling (capult) can be felt on the crown of the head. It disappears within a few days.

When the baby is born they will have 2 soft spots one towards the front of the head and one towards the back. The one in the back will harden when they are younger about 3 months old. The one in the front won't harden until thay are about 2 years old.

The soft spot (fontanelle) closes at different rates for different babies. It's typically closed by 12 months. My first son's wasn't closed at 18 months so they sent him to a specialist. He ended up being fine, just a rare case of large fontanelle that closed slowly. My second son's was closed by about 7 months.

it doesn't "disappear" they're head just gets stronger. So I wouldn't try to find out. Babies heads are so delicate and the slightest thing could end up in brain damage.
