I don't know much about a computer. I do know I have not downloaded many programs. The desktop has DSL but is so slow it takes so much time to do anything. Sometimes it just freezes and I have to unplug it. I have an antivirus connected. What I have just said is all I know about a computer. Can anyone help me using easy terms? Thank you so much.

Do you ever run scandisc and defrag? That could be part of the problem. You really should run those every couple weeks or so.

Is your antivirus Mcaffee Or Norton, those expire and then dont operate. If so go to MyComputer, AddDeletePrograms and remove those from it. Then get the free AVG antivirus from www.grisoft.com. Its very good equal to the pay for Norton or Mcaffee and is updated constantly. I suspect a worm or trogan in there has corrupted your Registry.

It sounds to me like you have corrupted files and programs that dont run properly, otherwise there would be no freeze frames

I suggest a Registry and file cleaner, a free trial one for 30 days. I use it almost daily, and got the pay version I like it so much . Get it free trial at
www.tune-up.com and then let it restore your computer to the point it was when it was new.

Try the browser FirefoxMozilla, develped for public usage by Mozilla Foundation Grant by a leading university. It doesnt use ActiveX, which is a program require for viruses and trogans to be active which could slow down your computer. You can download that to desktop and use Firefox and InternetExplorer which ever you wish at any time.

Chances are that you have a virus or some sort of spyware. Your best hope is to run a scan using your antivirus software and if it finds a virus use the program to remove it. If it does not find anything, then you should download a free antispy program such as Windows Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx. Install it and then run a scan with it and if it finds something. If it does follow the directions in the program to remove it. If that does not work you need to contact someone to help fix your computer in person.

Could be a few things:
Not enough memory to run more than one program. so try using one program, one at a time.
It could mean you have a poor internet connection and if its not broadband, then you could consider getting it.
Having an antivirus should not cause this, however did this problem start when you installed the antivirus?

So many things could be wrong. Your computer could be filled with spyware, or your harddrive could be low on space.

First, try defragmenting your harddrive. Click start, next click programs, then click accessories ---> system tools -----> disk defragmenter. Your computer files can become fragmented (like mixing up the pages from a book. it makes it slower to read the book) and the computer slows down trying to read them.

Try it and see if it speeds the computer up. Good luck.

your computer may have too much files stored in it that's why it slows down. try deleting files you dont really need anymore or by an extra hard drive which just needs to be plugged to ur usb port. in that way, you could transfer files into the hard drive making your computer work faster.
