You didn't say whether or not you were arrested or charges were filed....If not, maybe the place you were caught at is giving you a break. I'd keep my nose clean if I were you.
EDIT>>>>>>>>>>
Do you remember what the paper you signed said? That could make a difference, but with you being under 18, the value being small, and you not hearing anything yet, I'd say the guy is just letting you "sweat it out" and that that probably will be a good punishment for you. Try to not worry about it too much and just hope that's all that happens. Also, don't shoplift any more ANYWHERE.

The individual won't decide if the civil demand is sent. Somebody higher up the chain will decide if it will be sent to you. If it was only $5 I doubt it will be sent to you, they won't waist their time (it will cost more to send you out the information and pay somebody to process it than to not send it at all). That's why you were informed of it because it could show up in the mail.
You won't be sent to court or prosecuted. If they did send you a first notice and you didn't respond, they will send another letter before they would do anything further. But like I said, it's not worth the cost to them for somebody who took $5 of merchandise to put that much manpower into it.
Learn your lesson and don't do it again.

It's a possibility. Take this as a learning experience and never shoplift again. Things are not free it either has to be worked for or earned, they're pretty much the same but the idea is nothing is free, so don't do it anymore.

You're under 18 which means your record will be sealed going forward. Since you're scared and sorry, it means you learned your lesson. It means you are a good person who made a mistake. Don't ever forget the lesson.
Bottom line: don't do it again and you'll be fine. :)

It depends on what you stole, how much it cost. They may just let it slide, its very common. Dont stress it, your under 18, you arent going to jail, they wont come and get you. Take it as a lesson learned and move on.
If you get caught AFTER you're 18 you're screwed. Remember that.

Wow, I'm sorry for you. That's not cool. You probably will have to go to court. = (
And the word is "prosecuted" not "persecuted".
