You may have to reinstall Norton and then run a full scan, of course that means you will have to repay for your subscription.

First of all, take it from a computer tech: Norton is junk. So is McAfee. More info on anti-virus programs and how they rate:

To find out if you have an infection WITHOUT installign anything new, go to:
http://www.bitdefender.com

They have a free online virus scanner/cleaner.

For a good anti-virus program, here are some choices:

1) The best is Kaspersky. They have the highest detection rate. However, it is not free.

2) Second best would be, believe-it-or-not, AOL Safety Center. It's based on Kaspersky (same engine and signature files), with a few features missing (nothing super important). It's free, but you do need a valid email address, preferably an AOL address. You can get it form AOL's website aol.com

3) Not as good as the other two, but still good and 100% free is AVG Free Edition.

Looks like you will need to re install Norton, you don't say what Norton security programs you are using, maybe it's only Norton Antivirus, if you don't have the Firewall also, get one, the default XP one is weak.

To detect all any nasty stuff running on your system you can download and run HiJackThis, it will generate a log that you can send to an expert for analysis, forgive me if you are an IT Pro you can check it yourself.
For more info go here;

Oh, and all the feedback about Norton being rubbish is rubbish, it has one of the best detection rates going, and no I don't work for them.

I know a program called "Stinger" and it does the same thing as a virus scanner, but it detects worms. But sadly I think I forgot where I got it. Its a free download.

You don't have a virus. You have spyware. Install Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it. When you remove it, everything will go back to normal.
