V-line train!
Except I'm sorry but I have to advise not to go there because I grew up in Bendigo and (don't live there any more but) anyone from either town will understand when I say 'Ballarat is crap'.
"Think you're so good with Sovereign Hill and that cool Maccas with the conveyor belt thingy for drive through" (not that Bendigo really has anything like that).
Sorry, bit of cheerful old rivalry between towns. Bit like Vic and NSW I believe.
"I am not a Mexican thank you, I was actually BORN in NSW!"

Go to Caulfield Station and talk to them, they should have a V-Line section there. You will have to go into Southern Cross (the old Spencer St) station and catch the V-Line train out there. You will have to get a special ticket for the V-Line, probably around $10 for a return.

I think the Vline train leaves from Southern Cross Station (Spencer Street). It takes around 1hr20 mins depending on which train you catch.
Cost is around $34 for an ordinary fare.
Hope this helps

Train is the easiest way to go but there are also regular bus services. By the way, it is called "transportation" in the USA, it is called "transport" in Australia. "Transportation" is what many of the early settlers in Australia were sentenced to.
