All of these answers are somewhat correct, but don't really explain.

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module, and it is a little white chip, as described above, but what it does is identify you to the mobile network you are connected to. Cingular and T-Mobile are the two big carriers in the United States that use them, but any GSM carrier in the world uses a SIM card. GSM is a type of technology, (there are two types) that cell phones use, and GSM phones require a SIM card to be identified to the network. Each SIM has its own serial number, and each time a call is palced, the SIM number identifys you to the network to see what plan you have, if you are in your calling area, and if you can call where you are trying to call.

The other type of cell technology, CDMA, does the same things that is accomplished by a SIM card with the ESN (electronic serial number) on the back of the phone.

Advantages of a SIM card is that numbers can be stored to them like explained above, and some internet settings can be stored on them, to enable fancier internet profiles, such as newer 3G internet connections.

Hope this explains in pretty clear english.

A sim card is a chip in the back of your phone that holds information like phone numbers, and pictures (ect..) but if your numbers arent saved to your phone, the number wont be able to be transfored to a differnt phone...(we have machines) cingular and some nextels have it, but other cingular stores dont have the converter for nexte, because they suck. they can be differnt colors depending on the company like me and cingular, if the phon eis 3g, its blue and orange with the words 3g on it.

all newer phones have SIM cards. they're tiny white rectangular cards that fit inside your phone and store all the information you put in your phone. they're behind the battery.
