I read in the newspaper that NASA was planning to have a settlement on the moon by 2020. I want to go. Should I just call NASA? Is there an application I have to fill out? When do I start training? What should I study in University? Do I need my Driver's lisence to fly a rocket ship? I'll be 30 in 2020, is that too old? Too young? I need answers, people.
Thank you.

You will need:
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. Degree must be followed by at least three years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience. An advanced degree is desirable and may be substituted for part or all of the experience requirement (master's degree = 1 year of experience, doctoral degree = 3 years of experience). Quality of academic preparation is important.

2. Ability to pass a NASA space physical ...

3. Lots of luck.

No, you don't need a driver's license -- but you do need to be a airplane pilot to be a "rocket" pilot. A lot of astronauts are not pilots, they are "mission specialists".

Almost all astronauts are between ages 26 to 46 when they are selected.

When you find out, tell me, because I want to go too.

But don't hold your breath. There will be no settlement by 2020. If we are REALLY lucky there will be a small base with 4 people stationed there for 6 months at a time, just like there is now a space station in Earth orbit with 3 people stationed there for 6 months at a time. But the Moon base will be built years later than originally planned, maybe in 2050, and cost 10 times more than originally projected. But before that I bet private companies will have developed space tourist vehicles to take rich people on one week visits to the Moon, just like they now take people on 1 week visits to the Space Station on a Russian rocket.

Yes, you will need your driver's lisence.

I would go to school and then go to college. Following college,
get an MS and a PhD in AeroSpace Engineering.

Contact NASA and obtain information from them on Employment
Opportunities. Check the block on the form that says:
___Astronaut.

You will need to be in absolutely perfect health because they screen people by running them through a whole battery of
physical tests and exercises. So stay away from Alcohol,
Cigarettes, all kinds of drugs and Weed, no criminal background
either. Spend all your time studying Astronomy, Navigation, and
try to get a Pilot's License with certification in Single engine,
Multi-engine, Jet aircraft, and log enough hours to qualify yourself
to fly anything they have got...say 2000 hours. Take a part time
job as a flight instructor to put some icing on the cake. They ought to listen to you then...

30 is a good target age, a lot of astronauts are in their 40's. You need experience anyway to even think about becoming an astronaut. What you should do is track down Buz Aldrin or Neil Armstrong, follow them around, wait outside their house in your car, stuff like that. Maybe confront them in a shopping mall on a regular basis. No really, I think you need to join the Air Force before you can join NASA as an astronaut.

Forget NASA. When they finally land on the moon again they will step off their craft and see a colony started by a consortium of private companies. If you really want to go, get yourself a business degree, make about 50 million dollars, and then take a ride on a Space Adventures sponsored trip. Or get all the same degrees mention above by the other people, and get hired by a private space company.

Haha! I like your question. At present, to go to space you usually have to be a military pilot or some kind of engineer. But any long-term mission to the moon or Mars will probably need some biologists, geologists, maybe a doctor..... In short, our goals in space are becoming loftier, so opportunities will start opening up for people with specialized training in a variety of disciplines. My advice is: become a scientist and make a big name for yourself (professionally). Then, in a few years, apply to NASA. (Yes, they take applications). While you're at it, learn some Chinese, because that will probably come in handy on the moon in a few years :)

30 by 2020 is not too old or too young. Better start looking into applying to NASA now. :)

This is very interesting . I dont know if NASa has applications for the trip. However it would take a couple of milions to buy the ticket. Its a good idea to be able to go to the moon . we should send lots of people there.

Get a PHD in astro physics and then apply for a job at Nasa.
