I don't want to offend anyone. I just wonder if domestic violence occurs in same sex relationships?
We hear so much about "battered wives". I'm sure it must happen but we don't hear about this.
Is there anywhere that can help?
I am hetro sexual, been hurt badly in the past; now disabled because of the abuse.
I understand that a woman/ man can seek help if needed.
But is there any organisation that specialises in "same sex" abuse?
As i say, don't want to offend: just wondered.

Yes it does occur in same-sex relationships. As a matter of fact domestic violence in same-sex relationships has been on the rise since 2003. It just is not as talked about as heterosexual couples dealing with DV. People are people and everyone makes mistakes and has problem. The gay community is no exempt from that. I did a report on this same topic for a research assignment and found that most of the reasons why incidents of domestic violence in same-sex relationships goes unnoticed is that the victims often times dont tell anyone or if they do call the police they are many times dismissed as being mutual abuse because no one wants to deal with two men or two women fighting. The police see it as that the victimized partner had every chance of fighting back because they are both of the same gender. The psychology of it is different from heterosexual relationships, but the actions and occurences are not.

It's a problem, and help is available from the same agencies that offer help to hetrosexual's suffering the same. DV does not just mean spouses, it can be anyone suffering violence in a domestic situation, partners, elderly parents, disabled people cared for by a resident carer, children, even people who share rented accomodation.

Yes, it does occur. I know several people who were beaten severely by their partners. I don't know what it's like in other countries but in Canada agencies who help the victims of domestic violence help victims of domestic violence no matter what gender or orientation they are.
