I'm doing a commercial with my friends about how BAD animal abuse is!! We are mainly doing the shelter dogs. My friend told me that if a dog is in the shelter for more than a year it will be put down!! I think this is sad! so if you're ever going to buy a pet get a pet from a shelter! Remember "Animals have feeling too!"

Actually, I work in shelters. My local humane society is a no kill shelter, which means they never euthanize the animals, however, many other shelters euthanize dogs after only 3 days if the shelter is crowded. Really, the shelters try to keep the dogs as long as possible, but with all the breeders out there popping out more puppies, more and more dogs end up in the shelter, which takes up space. While some dogs may be lucky and be kept for 1 month, many will be kept for less than a week.

I don't know of a single shelter that will hold a dog for a whole year, and THEN euthanize it. That doesn't even make sense. They are euthanized way earlier than that

It is completely wrong and cruel. The same as child abuse, or abuse of anyone or anything. Animals are sentient beings, and feel pain. They also feel loss - cows and calves, mares and foals that are seperated feel terrible pain. If cats will run into burning buildings to save their kittens, can you really say they don't feel. And though they can't speak, and maybe don't think in the same way as we do, surely that means we should treat them better, not worse, as we know what we're doing.

I'm vegetarian, but I wouldn't make the whole world go veggie - I would however have far stricter rules on how farm animals are treated. They should not be made to travel long distances while alive, and should be killed in a quick and humane way, out of sight of the other animals.

When it comes to the dogs in Korea, I don't so much have a problem with the farmers, who keep the dogs in reasonable conditions. There really is no difference between eating a pig, cow, chicken, dog, or cat (in fact, pigs are more intelligent than dogs in many ways). What I do have a problem with there is how they treat the dogs at the market - squashed into tiny cages, and killed within sight, smell, and hearing distance of the others, which must scare the poor animals rigid.

Animal testing for cosmetic purposes is terrible, and some of the experiments done are totally cruel. The animals are often deprived of things they need - mainly the company of others of their kind. Various tests have been carried out by Procter and Gamble, who also produce Iams and Eukanuba dog and cat foods. These involved pumping out the animals stomachs regularly. The animals are so badly socialised, they could in the most part not become pets, and so are euthanized when the experiment they are in is over.

Medical testing is more of a grey area, but animals (even monkeys) are so different from us genetically, that things that don't affect them could seriously harm humans, and vice versa. I mean, the cure for Cancer could have been chucked out because it killed some dogs, but in humans it may have worked. I for one would be willing to test new drugs, in order for animals to not have to.

Veterinary testing is another matter, as medical testing is animals helping humans against their will, at least with veterinary testing it's helping their own kind. But I always think cell testing etc. is far better, and then tests on people who are willing to volunteer.

As for neglect - there should be far stricter rules on who gets an animal, and how it's treated. All animals have a right to the 5 freedoms - including food, shelter, and warmth. Why have an animal if you're not going to give it what it needs, and forget it exists. Animals should not be bought for children, unless they have been shown how to look after an animal, and you are prepared to make sure they do so, and help where needed

Finally we come to all out abuse. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and it is totally wrong!!! Whether it's a mouse or a cat, a rabbit or a dog, a hedgehog or a heron, it doesn't matter. Deliberately harming another being is madness. I work or have worked voluntarily in various parts of animal rescues, and the stories you hear are terrible.

The worst part is a lot of us are harming animals without realising. The plastic bits that hold beer cans together, and the tops to McDonalds McFlurry's catch hedgehogs, and as they grow they cut into them (don't get me wrong - I love MaccyD's food, but people need to cut these things up before putting them in a bin). String and bottles, and most other bits of rubbish can cause serious injury too. We're polluting the planet as well, which isn't helping. So well done if you do your bit, and chuck litter in the bin, not on the floor, and recycle etc.

Anyway, that's my thoughts. Good luck on your commercial, and sorry if I've gone on a bit, but it's a subject close to my heart.

Gemma :-)

P.S. Just read your update - it's true that a lot of shelters will put animals down after a while if they can't find them a home. Over here in England there's Dogs Trust and Cats Protection (as well as Battersea Dogs and Cats Home), who have a policy to not put a healthy animal down. However, shelters do do their best, and it's the unwanted litters and stray dogs where the problem is. Puppy farmers overbreed, and leave dogs with health problems and behaviour problems - these end up on the street, and in shelters pretty soon. Also, too many people think it'd be cute if their dog had puppies, when they don't know much about breeding, and don't think about homes. At least if you're doing that make sure you have enough homes BEFORE you breed the dog. But in general, get a rescue dog. Mine is, she was abused in the past, but she's great - I've had her 7 years now, and I can't believe it!!! So, please think of a rescue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Animal Abuse is wrong, just as wrong as any abuse. No doubt you are going to get many angry answers, but you should know what you are getting into.

Abuse of any kind is a touchy subject. It doesn't matter if you're talking to a person who has never been abused, or if you're talking to someone who has.

But back to animal abuse. My neighbors were convicted of animal abuse a few years ago. They had a single dog, who was always left in the yard, no matter the weather, and the dog was always at the fence every time I walked by. I could count her ribs. Her name? Dog, Girl, (Female Dog).... My family, among other neighbors, continued reporting them, and then, the dog died. When they got another puppy, that was the final straw. They were finally arrested, fined, and they are no longer allowed to have pets.

My point is that animals may not be people, and they can live on their own in the wild, but when we lock them up, and force them to die, that's when things get touchy.

In short, Animal Abuse is wrong.

Animal abuse is common in the US. All of us who know right from wrong know that it is wrong to abuse an animal. It is almost as wrong to allow this to happen unreported.

There are reasons to report animal abuse many are not aware of that they should be. The following contains important information that could save lives, human as well as animal.

The link between animal abuse and human abuse has become ever apparent. So much so, that the FBI now uses reports of animal abuse to help analyze the threat potential of suspected and known violent offenders. According to the FBI, 80% of violent offenders had previous incidents of animal abuse. Studies have also shown the link between animal abuse and child abuse. One study revealed that in 88% of 57 New Jersey families being treated for child abuse, animals in the home had been abused. The abuse was sometimes done by the same family member who abused the family. In some cases it was for the same reason the person abused the family. In other cases the animal abuse was done to intimidate or punish the abused family members. Sadly, some of the animal abuse was done by the child who was abused, as a way to act out their anger and hurt.

Still not convinced that it is absolutely neccesary to report animal abuse? Then read the following.....

Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Carrol Edward Cole, Son of Sam, Albert De Salvo "Boston Strangler", "Happy Face Killer" and Arthur Gary Bishop all had histories of animal abuse.

In an 18 month period there were 7 school shootings, here in the US. Most relating in the deaths of classmates. In all 7 of these shootings it was learned that the perpetraters had previously abused, tortured and killed animals.

i personally think that when adopting an animal or housing one u should take it into consideration that it is the same amount of hard work as taking care of a child. u shouldnt take home an animal if your going to neglect it and do what u want. it is against the law to abuse a child and it is the same with an animal. i mean animals are living 2 so why would u treat them like whatever. if u cud do that 2 ur child then u dont have a heart so what about a dog or a cat? if ur not ready to take care of or feed an animal then wait!

This is my opinion on it:
I hate it when people treat animals like nothing more then property. All animals, even ants can feel pain. Sometimes I feel so ashamed of the human race. We abuse animals all day as if we are eating chocolates, not terrorizing poor, innocent animals. Then usually the abuse is for us, animal testing for make up, cruelly killing animals for food, skiining them alive for fur, we are nothing more then greedy selfish jerks. I admit, I do eat cow and chicken, but not pork, lamb, viel, or any seafood, but I do prey that for any meat or poultry I eat that it had a long happy life and a quick, non painfull death. In some ways, I would rather hunt wild adult animals to eat. That way I would know that it had a long happy life and a quick, painless death. We could kill animals for food nicely, but instead humans torture them nearly to death. If I see an insect suffering where I know it has basically no chance of living, I quickly kill it to put it out of its misery. Personally, I dont give a frickn care about culture! Some cultures used and still might eat kids and sacrifice people hearts, eat people, and torture people. Would we say 'Well thats their culture, they should be allowed to do it"? No! Those people would be thrown in jail for senseless killing, and thats how it should be for all animals! The painfull tortoring, the senseless killing, the testing, all should stop!!!!
There is a really good book out there, called Children of the Earth Remember" Its a really touching story about how animals and humans used to be one loving family, then just friends, then the people forgot about their friendships with animals. You should really read it. Thank You So Much For Actually Caring About Animals, More People Should!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

It's horrible! If a person doesn't like animals, they should just stay away from them~~ not abuse them....
I think that whatever abusive situation the person put the animal in should be recreated as a similar situation for the human.....
You don't feed and water your dog for a week~~ you don't get any food or water for a week....
I'm with the eye for an eye answer!

Unfortunately in America there aren't harsh enough laws for people who do abuse animals. I think they get 1 year in jail or a 1000 dollar fine maybe. Most of the time they just get community service. These people who do things to defenseless animals should get whatever they did to an animal done to them
Put a tight collar on their neck for 2 months until it cuts into their skin and causes an infection or leave them tied up outside for 1 month without adequate food and dirty water.
I just wish we could do more to people who do these things to animals. Good luck on your commercial.

Well it's kind of a no-brainer. Abusing animals is wrong. Now torturing them and killing them for food is certainly ok. Check out the big chicken plant on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Salisbury some day. You would be shocked. Guess it depends on how cute the animal is.

I cry when I see commercials on tv about animal cruelty. I had a neighbor who left his 2 dogs kenneled all the time. Never let them out to run, supposedly they were hunting dogs, but seriously I never seen him take them hunting. (They pooped in the same small area they ate and slept)Anyway, it used to upset me so much that we moved. But not before I called the humane society. :-} Plus, I've heard that the way to tell how another person will be about raising their kids is to see how they treat their pets.
