I am having some mild cramping, but I am also having a sharp pain in my back that began before the cramping. It is in my middle back and not lower. Is this false or could it be back labor?? I am not good at timing contractions. Every time I have had B Hicks it just feels like a long cramp that wont stop.

If you have one, get a stop watch. Time the contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next. That's how far apart they are. If they are coming regular (as in every 5 minutes) for 30 minutes or longer, then most likely it's real labor. Contractions can feel different for each woman. So, I can't say whether that is what you are feeling or not. When labor starts, and you have timed the contractions for 30 minutes or longer and they are coming regular, you should phone your Dr or the hospital where you are going to be birthing and tell them. They can tell you whether or not to come in. Just start timing from the beginning of one till the beginning of another. I hope that this has helped you & I wish you the very best.
