Uddingston is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, on the north side of the River Clyde, approximately seven miles to the south-east of Glasgow.
It is home to Tunnock's factory, famed for its caramel wafers and teacakes. The factory contributes much to the village's economy as does the industrial estate located on the Bellshill Road. In earlier times mining was a major industry, with the long lost village of Flemington an example of a settlement that failed to survive following the closure of its pit.
Uddingston has a police station, traditional main street shops, pubs and rail station. It also has several sports clubs including a rugby club, a bowling and tennis club, Calderbraes Golf Club and a junior football club Thorniewood United.
The nearest big towns are Bellshill and Cambuslang: Bellshill is one stop along the Motherwell via Bellshill line, and Cambuslang can be accessed by all services except three per day. Local folk are known as the Villagers.
Uddingston has been home to successful sports people, in football Lindsay Hamilton goalkeeper with Stenhousemuir, Rangers, St Johnstone and Dunfermline, Jimmy Johnstone and George McCluskey, both of Celtic. David Kettle, who won numerous Scottish age group swimming titles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, also came from Uddingston.
Uddingston has also been known to win the Scotland in Bloom compitition and be runners-up in the Britain in Bloom competition, thanks to the help of Uddingston Pride and the community.

The Flemington Curse is the answer you're afraid to hear. When the mine went down times were so hard that some didn't make it.One whose loss might have cut the deepest was the widow MacAzzle who lost two boys and a girl. Before she moved to Glasgow a broken lonely and bitter woman, she swore a curse that every other son of the town be gay. At the present , the curse seems to have surpassed her anticipated percentage and recalls the saying (from the original gaelic) "Paint me pink and call me an Uddingstonite...... PS Frog dunna know the colour of shite!

I just read it is the home of Tunnocks and alot of mining took place there. Have you got a local history book that councils usually print every year. Phone the council and ask if they do that.
