Virginia boy here. Check with your power company for the service capacity for your house. They can easily tell you the max you can install. You could probably get away with a 100 amp if it's only 1000sf but around this area most panels are 200 amp. They only cost a few dollars more and would be easier for an electrician to work in especially on a replacement. Plus you will have no problem adding circuits if you expand or remodel. I'd recommend a Square D since their breakers can be found almost anywhere and they are unlikely to ever change dramatically or go out of date like several other manufacturers.

Good Luck!

We used a 200 amp box, and also installed a 100 amp off of it to go out in the garage. We had a certified electrician do all of the work then a inspector had to come in and check it out before the electric could be turned back on.

Typical of the time was 60A, so, it might be overkill to go to 200A. Today's homes have so much electronics in them, the standard is now 200A. If you are planning to add-on, or sell soon, probably more is better. If you don't have too many outlets, and don't plan on adding them, 200A is probably overkill...
Have the wiring checked by an electrician, and you will need an inspection. Its code, and its much safer. Ask the electrician what he recommends.
One note, get as many slots in the box as you can. (where the breakers connect in the "box") it will help keep you from overloading a breaker later, from experience...

u'd check the wiring first, and if it is up to par, I would put in a 200 amp service, You may have to change the feeder to the circuit box, This world be for an electrician to do this.
