It was my gift. People were asking for my advice quite often, and I loved the field of psychology. I went back to college at night while working full time. I loved the experience, and it came so easily to me, I knew it was my field.
As a practicing therapist, I felt great stress at times, but I also felt tremendous gratification for those clients who I helped. I realized, at one point, I didn't only help that one person, but their generations to come.

I started out a a psychiatric nurse but got very disillusioned by the treatment of patients, I was told I was too political for nursing so went into social work. I am not and never wanted to be a do gooder, leave that for well meaning others, but did want to help people who needed help and be able to use my position to change things. I hate that we have a tag of do gooders, and that people only get half the picutre when things go wrong. But I wouldn't change my job, the salary is good, can be very stressful, but when something finally comes together it is brilliant. I am still a radical social worker and go the extra 10 yards for people when needed, we need to make sure that we don't just become form fillers and swim upstream when we need to.

My mother was put into a psychiatric hospital 10 days after my birth. She was in and out of hospitals all of my life. When I was chosen as an adult furthering her education I knew I didn't want to be a teacher so I went into Social Work. After graduating I went to work at the same hospital my mom was often in for treatment. I learned alot of things in school but the best was that I didn't cause her illness it was hereditary. I worked as a psychiatric social worker and addictions counsellor and left after a back injury. It is very stressful being in the helping profession and people burn out rather often.

I wanted a profession that was meaningful to society, where I could play a role in positive change and also be intellectually challenging.

Because I see a need. I really believe that when one has a stable home, with an atmosphere to grow, their limits on life and now not endless, but never ending. I am wanting to offer this to individuals with developmental disabilities

I wanted to be able to help people constructively and have a noble career and meaningful life. But it wears you down after a while and managers do not always support you

Personal stuggles and successes. I wish I had had someone to be there for me when I was going through tough times, so now it's my turn to be there for someone who needs it.
