It may be a memento thing or something like that, but why don't they just take it off and keep it in their house? It looks so odd and out of place, just like leaving a tag hanging off a new pair of jeans.

I can't speak for anyone else, but in my case it's just laziness. It doesn't get in the way, it just hangs there, and I don't even notice it. The only time I take the tags off is when I'm going skiing again and I need a new tag and there isn't room for it. The tag I have on my coat now has probably been there for about five years.
Plus I don't think it looks out of place--it's called a SKI jacket, after all--that's what it's meant for.

i am too lazy to take it off, and only use my ski coat when I ski. So next year I just stick new tag on over the old.
Once you remove tag from jacket it is pretty much shredded and not much of a momento, unless you take a wire cutter to it or something.

For the same reason that people don't take the tags off their luggage after they fly.... Those things are always a pain in the butt to get off, especially the ski lift ones, they use that wire deal to put it on your jacket. Then they just throw their stuff in a closet and forget about it...

There are two possibilities. First, they are lazy and they don't want to take the time to remove the tickets because they are hard to get off; or (2) they think its cool to show everyone where they skied and how often.

It's a badge of honour in Canada, akin to keeping all of your luggage stickers on from everywhere you've been so that others can see them. "Look how often I've been to Jasper, or Banff, or Lake Louise..." My mom's a ski patroller. All she has to do is whip out the jacket, and she trumps everyone. That's really why she did trained for it, actually... That, and the free skiing...

It's Funny, I just asked someone this question recently. Here is what i came up with.
To show they ski
To look cool
Its just a thing most people do, if you were a skiir you would know
To accesorize
To feel confident about them selves.
There are so many reasons, the lsit could go on, but they all do it for one reson or other.

some peole are to cheap to by suviniers so they keep there sky-lift tags on thier winter coats.
