Im a Zambian studying in a foreign country (In Europe). People have asked me questions about Africa which have left me wandering what they are taught in school. Questions like: Do you speak African, do you have houses, TVs, Radios, Cars etc. Do you have a lion for a pet, do you eat people. Why are you black? How come you speak good English? Do you have schools, do elephants, lions, Zebras walk in your streets etc. Sometimes there really sound fun but most of the time irritating. One time I was in a club with my friend and a white girl came and asked us where we were from, my friend answered Zambia. I asked if she knew why Zambia was, she said no. My friend asked her if she knew where Japan was, she said yes, Tokyo? she said yes. then my friend said Zambia is between Japan and Tokyo. She said ok I see. We laughed the whole night.

Great question and comments. I think mostly people are just curious and want to be friendly and want to know about where you are from. It's obvious we (in America for sure) don't do our world history or world geography like we should!

I, for example, now know that Zambia is a country with no oceans as borders that it is in southern Africa. It used to be Northern Rhodesia but is now called Zambia from the Zambezi River. Your Independence from the UK was on October 24, 1964. Zambia is a bit bigger than the US state of Texas, our biggest continental state. The capital (and largest city) is Lusaka. There are approximately 12,000,000 people in Zambia. And is is really true that English is your official language?

Thanks for helping me to learn something new today! :o)

PS DO you have a pet lion? JUST kidding!

I'm from Uganda and when I tell people this, they ask me if I knew anyone from South Africa, like Africa is one big country. Still some of the funniest ones include:
-Does it snow there?
-Have you ever seen any lions/other wildlife near your house?
-Do people have televisions there?
-Have you ever seen a car?
-Do Africans run around the bush chanting spells or engaging in other tribal rituals?
-Do you all speak the same language?
But the best has got to be, where is Uganda, is it closer to South America or the Philippians?
Then I laugh and tell them it's a city in the Bahamas and they go "ahhh."

It's too many of these commercials and programs on B.E.T. Like the Motorola red phone is donating money to Africa to eliminate AIDS and stuff. Or like a program like " Feed the Children " which only shows the really poor parts of Africa. I think it's so dumb.

i tend to have the same with my country, im dutch.

when ever i tell someone im dutch, they jump to 1 of 4 subjects:
Wheed, Amsterdam, or Prostitution, Homosexuals.

i tend to just introduce myself as a wheedsmokin manwhore from amsterdam ^^.

i think its just what people see and hear on tv, africa is still shown as men in huts with voodoo sticks in most western media.
