Ohhh yes - you can spend hours and hours listening to a person - give up your time your energy and end up as down as them. But the one day you cant do it - the dog needs walking/the bus is coming/the last episode of your fave prog is on...and you explain to them gently that you need to be away for an hour...BANG 'you never listen to me -its ok ill go elsewhere'

It has happened to me twice, and yet human nature lets you get walked on again - cos you never learn from it

In the now immortal words of janet jackson,
"what have you done for me LATELY"

you are only as good as your last deed.
I had a friend who needed shyt every week.
I needed something (a ride when my car was stolen) and she was going to get her nails done.

Re evalute the friendships of the people in your life with bad memories or selective amnesia.
Do it now so thatyou wont waste any more effort on these people
They will drain all of your resources and put you out like old klennex.

Oh yes, i get that all the time, and its the good things isnt it that they dont seem to remember, the things you went out of your way to do for them, but because they cant follow those expectations themselves , they choose to forget when their supposed to give it back.GOOD QUESTION FOOD FOR THOUGHT ....

Yes, for whatever reason it's a lot easier for people to point out the bad things you do rather than praise you for the good things.
