The defining moment in my life was when I gave birth to my children. They have changed everything--my perspective on life to all the decisions that I think throughly instead of spontaneously because I think how my choices will affect my children. I was blessed to have this happen twice. They are my pride and joy, and they have showed me the true meaning of unconditional love, as well as what is and isn't important in my life.

The birth of my son in 1991; being a parent, and especially a single parent, changed everything for me. It was that immense responsibility that has forced me to stop talking about how things should be and start living that way.

My love and devotion to him are what gave me the determination to leave my alcoholic husband, and having his visitation revoked when he wouldn't stay sober around our son. Less than 2 years later, his father's addictions killed him.

Being a parent has also led me to re-parent myself. I was molested as a child, and have had many self-esteem issues and major depressions throughout my life. Helping my son work through his complex emotions around the loss of his father has brought me to see my own circumstances differently.

Getting my Master's degree in 1992 was another defining moment. My first year of grad school I was pregnant, and the second year, I was nursing a newborn. Those were challenging times, and it's all a blur now! But I am fortunate to have found a career that is very well suited to my abilities and personality. My career has also helped me see myself differently than the piece of trash I was taught to see myself as.
