i have some small rock left over from my fish tank can I use that instaed of sand or gravel in the bottom of my Terrarium?also half the sites I read say that I should put moss over the rocks and then out the soil on, but the other half don't say anything about moss. Can I do it without moss? And if not does anyone have any idea how expensive a little moss is?
Thanks

Any small rocks can be used in a terrarium for drainage. I've never heard of putting moss over the rock but maybe it helps to keep the soil from leeching through the rock layer thus defeating the purpose of having the rocks there in the first place...namely drainage. I a small bag of sphagnum moss, which is what I assume the sites mean, is relatively inexpensive at place like Walmart in their garden shop.

Seems a waste of the rocks, but they work.
To cover the rocks; I always used either plastic (fiberglass) screen, or weed prevention material on top of the rocks. Its important to stop leaching of the soil. Once good roots are established, its not as important.
When I have been on a tight budget, coffee filters work. Even newspaper, I think, would work. Once its covered, most things will last a long time. Just make sure they filter the water.

many homeowners of teach high quality fish and breeders with “uncommon” and extreme high quality breeding inventory want conserving fish in bare backside tanks. the reason being that the fish are much less probably to swallow substrate. As you indicated, the tanks are additionally lots much less complicated to maintain sparkling and bare backside tanks supply much less possibility for risky bacteria to colonize. some would say fish will die in bare backside tanks because of the fact the substrate serves to offer a medium for valuable bacteria to stay in. In bare backside tanks, the filter out can provide the media for the valuable bacteria.
